Welcome to La Tierra
Before there was a family of communities across New Mexico, there was La Tierra. Built in Ruidoso in 1999 from reclaimed timber and recycled materials, it set the pattern every sister community has followed since: sturdy single-story homes, honest below-market rents through the tax-credit program, and a setting worth waking up in. Housing Choice Vouchers are welcome here. Twenty-five years on, the timber has weathered beautifully, and so has the idea.

Green-built from the ground up
The posts and beams that frame each home were salvaged and reused rather than cut new. A quarter century later, that weathered timber is still the signature of the community.
Recycled and responsibly sourced materials went into the homes from the start, in 1999, years before green building became common practice.
The community was built inside the existing village rather than out on raw forest land, keeping groceries, healthcare, and village services a short trip away.
Homes sit among the existing pines and follow the wooded hillside, so summers stay cool at nearly 7,000 feet and the forest stays part of everyday life.
La Tierra came first: the community that began a New Mexico family of green-built affordable communities, whose newer sisters have earned Enterprise Green Communities certification and U.S. Green Building Council LEED ratings up to Platinum.

La Tierra sits on a quiet street in the heart of Ruidoso, minutes from Lincoln County Medical Center, Albertsons Market on Mechem Drive, and the shops and restaurants of Midtown.
Good to know
La Tierra is an independent-living community for adults 55 and better. At least one member of the household must be 55 or older, and household income must fall within the limits of the affordable housing program. One phone call is usually enough for us to tell you whether you qualify.
Rents at La Tierra are set below market by the affordable housing program and adjust from time to time, so please call the office for today's exact rate on a one bedroom or two bedroom home. Rent is a set amount, not a percentage of your income.
Household income must fall below limits that HUD sets each year for Lincoln County. The limits depend on how many people live in the home and change annually, so the surest way to know is to call with a rough idea of your monthly income. We can usually tell you the same day.
